Flash Storage and Memory - Definition and History

As senior manager at MSDI, Evan Loring is responsible for reviewing maintenance costs and overseeing corporations’ annual budgets for information technology. Prior to his position at MSDI, Evan Loring served as a receivers coach for the Harvard University football team. His professional interests include all-flash data centers and all-flash storage.

You are probably familiar with USB flash drives, which use flash storage to preserve files and images. Flash storage refers to a data repository that uses flash memory, a form of electronically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM). The two primary types of flash memory, NOR and NAND, were created more than 30 years ago by Dr. Fujio Masuoka of Toshiba. A flash storage system is typically controlled with a memory chip and flash controller. In recent years, flash memory has become increasingly popular in the market due to its speed, convenience, and ability to retain data when a device is powered off.
